It’s May and my garden is making up for the winter.  It is so beautiful here that it’s really hard for me to go to the loft or sit at the computer and work.  Pep thinks that there are more blossoms on the apple trees than he has ever seen.  There should be plenty of apples for cider, pies and for me to string for the mantle and Christmas tree.  I just love the whole view when I walk from the barn to the house.  Right inside the fence are the spikes of the Egyptian walking onions, then the color and droop of my bleeding hearts, my painted slate markers in nice rows of dark soil for the early veggies and, in the background, the gorgeous color and softness of the apple trees.  And since I don’t have a fabric line coming out at Spring Market, I really have time to enjoy it.  I don’t have to run around like crazy getting ready for the trip to Portland.  I love Portland but it is such a long drive.
Another flower block for the 5th block in the Mystery Quilt.  See the Home Page and the Mystery Quilt Page for a drawing of the blocks, border and sashing.  There will be 2 more house blocks (and a few more “garden” things) but I think next month, June, is the last flower block.  A very nice lady called the other day to say that she hadn’t gotten the border and sashing for the quilt.  Barbara checked our records which showed that we had sent them with the February block and they hadn’t been returned.  When Barbara called, it turned out that our quilter had been doing all of the flower blocks first and hadn’t noticed that she’d gotten the border and sashing with the February house block.  I don’t blame her – after the winter everyone has had, I’d be doing the flower blocks first too.
And along with gardens come baskets.  Our Quilt of the Quarter this May is “Basket Patch”.  Basket Patch was designed mostly by my friend Cyndee Dvorak.  I widened it a little and did the color – of course out of our Hemming House line.  We think it’s soft and inviting – and pretty easy to piece and appliqué.  I can just see it on an old iron bed – awesome.  I may have to get one.
I’m working on the Girl Gang quilt for this year – called, I think, “Collections”.   I decided that during the month of May, if at all possible I’m going to the garden each day at 4:00 to sit and sew.  Let’s see if I can manage it.
Keep quilting ladies.
Jan
